1. What is the difference between convergence and divergence? Give an example to support.
Convergence is when somebody changes their language in order to fit in with another group i.e. changing your language to be more professional when in a meeting as apposed to when you're out talking to your friends - people use this so they are able to relate to the group of people and can fit in.
Divergence is when somebody keeps the same language throughout no matter who they're talking about. They may use this to distance themselves. This is very apparent in the younger generations as they try to create their own identity and thrive to be a lot more independent.
2. What's the name of Gile's theory and what year was in done in?
It's called the Accommodation theory and was created in 1973.
3. Give some examples of acronyms you use in day to day life with their meanings.

TBF = To Be Fair
TBH = To Be Honest

Acronym's are used to speed up language. They can be used in specifics to an occupation i.e. school has GCSE's and if you were to work in the health and social care setting you have things such as 'ICU' and 'CPR' etc.
Could be linking to Convergence - can be used so that they can relate to a group of people like their workers or school friends etc.
5. Define and give an example of discourse structure.
This is a grammatical structure only familiar to a specific occupation i.e. discussing a specific prescription doctor to patient.
6. Define and give an example of discourse community.
This is when there is a community of people who may share common characteristics in their language and discourse structures etc. To be able to join a community they may have to share the same level of knowledge in certain areas in order to relate and share those characteristics. If not they may have to require some skills i.e. a community of cricket players, they spend a lot of time together and sare the same knowledge on the sport so may be able to relate.

Swales came up with this theory in 2011. Making this quite a recent and up-to-date theory unlike older ones.

This included thinking the way you use language can affect your 'hierarchy' within a group. It is also described as 'implicit ways of thinking, behaving and communicating.

This theory focuses on how they don't use the same language as others in orders to distance themselves to avoid association with a particular social group. There was a study done on this is Cheshire when children who approved of behavior used the non-standard features.
